Community Journalism: Meet the Managers
Organised by the Interhacktives
Come one, come all, to the first Interhacktives meet-up, which asks:
- How can online communities assist and enhance traditional journalism?
- What does a community manager actually do?
- Which are the most useful social media and online tools?
Four experienced industry panellists will talk about their experiences of community journalism, with plenty of time for questions from the audience and a chance to meet other people working in this field.
Date: Wednesday 13th March 2013
Time: 7pm
Venue: The Blacksmith & The Toffeemaker
Location: Angel, Islington
It gives us great pleasure to announce our excellent speakers:
Nick Petrie is Social Media and Campaigns Editor at The Times and The Sunday Times. Interested in communities, conversations and storytelling, he founded Wannabe Hacks, a popular site for would-be journalists.
@petren
Hannah Waldram is a Community Coordinator at the Guardian, working to engage with online readers and enhance storytelling through experimentation with new tools. A dance enthusiast with a background in hyper-local journalism, she co-founded the #cmLDN meet-ups.
@hrwaldram
Sarah Drinkwater runs a team of community managers at Google who persuade city dwellers to share their favourite places, from parks to cafes. She sees citizen journalism as very similar and her job being: how can we encourage useful, high-quality debate? "It's democratising opinions; sometimes the critic is wrong and your best friend is right."
@sarahdrinkwater
Tom Phillips is International Editor at MSN. A hat-wearing ex-comedian, he runs the Is Twitter Wrong? verification service to debunk myths and separate facts from fiction.
@flashboy
It’s free to come along, but please reserve your place.
This is a public event for anyone with an interest in community management, social media and journalism.
About the Interhacktives:
The Interhacktives are postgraduate Interactive Journalism students from City University London. We are fascinated by how the media is responding to the growing role of digital and are keen to learn from people at the cutting edge of these developments.
